Engineering practice is increasingly confronted with complex “wicked problems” at the intersection of technical, social, environmental, and cultural contexts. The tools of conventional engineering science, struggle to address the relational, human dimensions embedded into systemic challenges.
This presentation explores how emotional intelligence, design thinking, and systems thinking can expand engineering practice toward a more holistic, adaptive, and responsive form of problem solving – seeing engineering projects as leverage points to create meaningful social impacts.
Eric Wilson is an Associate at RJC Engineers and the Director of Innovation and IPCA Infrastructure at the IISAAK OLAM Foundation. His work focuses on delivering resilient, community-centered infrastructure solutions in partnership with Indigenous communities. Eric’s professional and academic interests explore how emotional intelligence can be integrated into engineering practice to improve engineers’ ability to engage with complex challenges. Eric advocates for holistic approaches to project delivery that use engineering projects as leverage points for reconciliation
