Student Competitions and Paper Submissions
The CSCE 2010 Local Organizing Committee and the Student Affairs Committee of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) invite undergraduate and graduate engineering students to take part in the CSCE 2010 Annual Conference, Winnipeg, MB (June 9-12, 2010) by submitting papers that will be considered for publication in conference proceedings and evaluated for the student competitions.
The student competitions and paper submissions offer an opportunity for students to present their research activities. Students who wish to participate in the competition must submit a full length paper, not exceeding 10 pages, including figures and tables in word format by February 1, 2010 to CSCE_2010@umanitoba.ca
. Please identify your selection of either the general conference or one of the specialty conferences.
The student must submit their paper using the “Paper Template” that can be found at the Paper Submission area of the conference website. If a student has already submitted an abstract for the 2010 Conference, the paper template can be found at the paper submission area after logging into the website. If the student has not previously submitted an abstract, the student should request an electronic copy of the “Paper Template” from the CSCE student competition contacts listed below. Only one paper per student is allowed in the student competition.
Notification of paper acceptance and request for revision (as necessary) will be by March 1, 2010. Any student paper that is accepted will be published in the conference proceedings and will be entered into the student competition. The final student paper should be submitted before March 15, 2010.
Each student author should be prepared to deliver an oral presentation on their paper as part of the competition at the CSCE 2010 Annual Conference.
Evaluation Criteria
The student competition will be judged based on an evaluation of the of the written submission (50%) for the quality, originality and effort in the research work and the presentation (50%) for the quality of presentation, clarity of the research work and ability to communicate the research idea, and the response to questions from the audience and the panel of judges.
The paper must include the following and will be evaluated based on the following criteria:
- Clear introduction to the topic/project/design/research.
- Literary quality of the paper.
- The objectives of the project/design/research.
- Design/Research methodology and Project Management Approaches.
- Technical Value of the Project/Design/Research.
- Innovation of the Project/Design/Research.
- Creativity of the Project/Design/Research.
- Key Contributions/Deliverables
- Conclusions and recommendations
Rules and Regulations
- All students should submit a Student Competition Application Form along with their paper by February 1, 2010. The paper guidelines can be downloaded from the CSCE 2010 annual conference website.
- Only one paper per student is allowed in the student competition.
- Each student author should be prepared to deliver an oral presentation on their paper.
- All student presenters will have to register for the CSCE 2010 Annual Conference. Neither CSCE nor the CSCE 2010 Annual Conference Local Organizing Committee is able to provide funds for travel or towards the conference registration fee.
- The authorship of the submission should include the name of student, and a maximum of two of the research advisor(s) (if any, and if required by your advisors), clearly identifying the names of the Research Advisor(s) (supervisor or professor) after the student’s name. The student must write the paper and present the paper though the guidance of the Research Advisors may be sought.
- Applicants must be a student member of CSCE and must be registered as an undergraduate/graduate student in an university or technical college. (Annual CSCE student membership is only $10.00 plus tax.)
- By participating in the contest, all participants authorize the contest organizers and CSCE to use their names and/or photograph and/or likeness and/or voice, if required, for communication and promotional, non-profit, purposes, without remuneration. CSCE reserves the right to publish submissions submitted to the contest that it believes relevant on its Internet site.
Prizes
Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three student presentations and paper submissions. The first prize winner will be published in the Canadian Civil Engineer and on the CSCE web site.

Second Place: $ 300.00
Third Place: $ 100.00
