Undergraduate and Graduate Student Competitions and Paper Submissions

The CSCE 2009 Local Organizing Committee and the Student Affairs Committee of the Canadian Society for Civil Engineering (CSCE) invite undergraduate and graduate engineering students to take part in the CSCE 2009 Annual Conference, St. John’s, NL (May 27-30, 2009) by submitting papers that will be considered for publication in conference proceedings and evaluated for the student competitions.

The student competition and paper submission offers an opportunity to present research activities. A short paper, not exceeding 10 pages for undergraduate and graduate students, including figures and tables must be submitted in pdf format before January 31, 2009 electronically through the conference website
.

The submission must use the “Paper Template” that can be found at the Paper Submission area after logging in to the website.  A maximum of two submissions are allowed per student.  Any paper that is accepted will be published in conference proceedings and will be entered into the student competitions.  Notification of paper acceptance and request for revision as necessary will be by February 28, 2009.  The final paper draft should be submitted electronically through the conference website before March 15, 2009.  Each student author should prepare to deliver an oral presentation on their paper as part of the competition at the CSCE 2009 Annual Conference.

Evaluation Criteria

The student competition will be judged based on an evaluation of the of the written
submission (50%) for the quality, originality and effort in the research work and the presentation (50%) for the quality of presentation, clarity of the research work and ability to communicate the research idea, and the response to questions from the audience and the panel of judges.

The paper must include the following and will be evaluated based on the following criteria:

i. Clear introduction to the topic/project/design/research.

ii. Literary quality of the paper.

iii. The objectives of the project/design/research.

iv. Design/Research methodology and Project Management Approaches.

v. Technical Value of the Project/Design/Research.

vi. Innovation of the Project/Design/Research.

vii. Creativity of the Project/Design/Research.

viii. Key Contributions/Deliverables

ix. Conclusions and recommendations

Rules and Regulations

i. All applicants should submit an application form and a paper by January 31, 2009.  The application and the guidelines can be downloaded from the website.

ii. All presenters will have to register for the CSCE 2009 Annual Conference. Neither CSCE nor the CSCE 2009 Annual Conference Local Organizing Committee are able to provide funds for travel or towards the conference registration fee.

iii. The authorship of the submission should include the name of student, and a maximum of two of the research advisor(s) (if any, and if required by your advisors), clearly identifying the names of the Research Advisor(s) (supervisor or professor) after the student’s name. The student must write the paper and present the paper though the guidance of the Research Advisors may be sought.

iv. Applicants must be a student member of CSCE and must be registered as an undergraduate/graduate student in an university or technical college.  (Annual CSCE student membership is only $10.00 plus tax.)

v. By participating in the contest, all participants authorize the contest organizers and CSCE to use their names and/or photograph and/or likeness and/or voice, if required, for communication and promotional, non-profit, purposes, without remuneration. CSCE reserves the right to publish submissions submitted to the contest that it believes relevant on its Internet site.

Prizes

A cash prize will be awarded to the top three presentations. The first prize winning presentations will be published in the Canadian Civil Engineer and on the CSCE web site.

Presentation Language

The presentations can be in English or French.
