Register for the Companion's Program through the conference registration link: www.csce.ca/2009/annual/Registration

There will be two full-day tours (lunches included) for the companions during the conference.  Tour activities will include, but may not be limited to:

1.  A visit to the Colony of Avalon (www.heritage.nf.ca/avalon), in Ferryland.  This is a working archeological dig about 2 hours south of St. John’s.   Have you ever walked on a 17th–century street, seen a 17th–century herb garden, or looked at the remains of everyday life in one of the earliest European colonies in North America?  If you haven't, the Companions’ program will take you there.

2.  A visit to Cape Spear (www.pc.gc.ca/lhn-nhs/nl/spear/index_E.asp).  This is the eastern most point in North America.  There is a walking trail along the coastline where whales can sometimes be sighted.   See the two historic lighthouses and view the remnants of cannons used in defence of the city in times past.  The oldest surviving lighthouse in Newfoundland and Labrador is located here.  It has been restored to its 1839 appearance and shows how a light keeper and his family might have lived in the mid-19th century. The Visitor Centre contains exhibits on the history of lighthouses and the tradition of light keeping. The site is surrounded by spectacular scenery and wildlife such as whales, seabirds and icebergs in season.

3.  A visit to Petty Harbour-Maddox Cove (www.pettyharbourmaddoxcove.ca).  This is a picturesque and historic fishing village first settled in the 1600’s, just south of St. John’s (approximately 15 minutes away).  A town of approximately 950 people, it is located on the eastern shore of the Avalon Peninsula in Motion Bay, where the scenery is breathtaking.  It is also the site of the first hydro plant in Newfoundland and Labrador, built before 1900 and still in operation.

4.  A tour of St. John’s and vicinity (www.stjohns.ca/visitors/index.jsp).  St. John’s is one of the oldest cities in North America and is nestled around a harbour surrounded by 500 million year old rock and hills overlooking the city.  We will see quaint multicoloured salt box houses along winding streets and atop hillsides.  We may visit Quidi Vidi village and see some of the oldest homes in the city and a micro-brewery.
